Cowbridge Cricket Club were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Hugh on 28th December 2025, aged 62.


Hugh represented the club as a young teenager whilst attending Bundell's School, Devon before going on to make his first class debut for Glamorgan CCC aged just 17 years old and going on to become their youngest captain at the age of 22. He captained Glamorgan to victory in the Sunday League in 1993 and was part of the Glamorgan side that won the County Championship in 1997 scoring 1,207 runs at an average of 54.86.


Hugh's International career included a tour of Australia in 1990-91 before playing three tests later that year - two against the formidable West Indies and one against Sri Lanka. He also led England A on tours to South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka.


His first class career spanned 17 years from 1980 to 1997 during which time he amassed 19,785 runs at an average of 40.29


Upon retirement Hugh worked for several years for the England and Wales Cricket Board where he was technical coaching director before being appointed Chief Executive in 2007. His successful tenure included the men's team reaching No1 in the Test rankings winning three Ashes series and the 2010 T20 World Cup.


In 2013 Hugh returned to Glamorgan CCC as Chief Executive and Director of Cricket and before his retirement in 2023 oversaw the County's return to financial stability, delivery of multiple successful international matches including the memorable 2015 Ashes Test and the men's ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 as well as making Sophia Gardens home to a successful Hundred franchise.


In 2022 Hugh was recognised by Her Majesty the Queen in what proved to be her final Birthday Honour's List being awarded the MBE for his services to cricket and charity.


A funeral service to remember Hugh's extraordinary life will take place on Tuesday 20th January 2026 at Llandaff Cathedral starting at 11am. This will be followed by a wake, for those who knew Hugh personally, to be held at Sophia Gardens stadium.


The thoughts and prayers of all at Cowbridge CC are with Hugh's wife, Debbie, their twin daughters, Bethan and Emily, brother Andy and all of Hugh's family and friends at this time.
